THE GARTHAM QUEEN: In this project, I was given a brief to take the ‘Dark Crystal’ universe and develop a character or creature from an imagined prequel, sequel or remake that incorporated anew genre or twist. Having been given ‘Gothic Horror’ as my starting point I developed a greater visual style, with analogues for a number of Dark crystal characters and peripherals. This culminated in ‘The Gartham Queen’, an original character/monster that is the ruler of the monstrosities seen in the original film. She claims to have once been a gelfling herself, but was corrupted by ‘the crystal heart’, and she attempts to coax the heroine from her path. hiding behind a porcelain mask while she skulks in the shadows beneath the castle.

The final model was hand sculpted in Super Sculpey, and coloured digitally.
